What is acid rain?
Acid rain is the mixture of wet and dry material (that is deposited) from the atmosphere containing higher than the normal amount of nitric and sulphuric acids. Both the wet and dry forms of acid deposition fall on cars and buildings that can also make lakes acidic. Wet deposition will often appear as rain or snow where as dry deposition will appear as forms of gases and dust become acidic.
What causes Acid Rain? Acid rain occurs when compounds like sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides create a chemical reaction and are released into the air. Human activity is the main cause of acid rain. The mix of gases in the Earth’s atmosphere has been changed because humans have released different chemicals in the air. Sometimes rain can already be acidic with pH levels around 5.0. Acid rain is caused mainly by nature’s activity. What does Acid rain effect?
Acid rain can cause lakes, trees and streams to become acidic. Acid rain can also affect buildings and people’s homes. Acid rain can have major effects, because it is so strong it can cause buildings to decay.
